Children's Programs

 

BPL children's logoOur wonderful children's librarian, Ms. Betty, has programs for all ages.  Below is an explanation of all the classes.  Actual dates are listed in our online calendar.  If you have any questions, please call the Library at 815-932-6245 or email Ms. Betty.  Stop by the Library to register any time. We look forward to seeing you!

Laptime for Infants 9 months - 2 years 

Laptime is a weekly parent-child interactive program for infants 9 months to 2 ½ years old. This program meets weekly on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. for ½ hour. Parents are required to stay with the children during the ½ hour of songs, finger plays, movement games, bounce songs, and books to share time. Pre-registration is requested; call the library for more information or to register your child.


Tottime for Toddlers 2 - 3 years old

Tottime is a weekly program, on Wednesdays at 11:00 am, for parent-child interaction. The program is geared to help prepare the child for storytime. The class will run 30 minutes and include stories and simple crafts, teaching the use of crayons, glue, and scissors. Guardians are required to stay with the child. Pre-registration is requested; call the library for more information or to register your child.


Storytime for Preschoolers 3 - 5 years old

Storytime is a program for children 3 – 5 years of age. There are several storytime classes to pick from: Tuesday nights at 6:30, Wednesday afternoons at 1:30, or Thursday mornings at 10:00 a.m. This program consists of storytelling at the beginning and a parent-assisted craft to follow. Parents/guardians are required to stay for this program. This program encourages the love of reading, learning to sit still, following directions, and practicing social skills. Pre-registration is requested for this program, call the library for more information or to register your child.


Early Readers Club

This program is for children in Kindergarten to 2nd grade. The class will meet every Monday at 4:30 p.m. at the library. Parents are not required to stay with the child, but are encouraged to stay in the library. This one-hour program will consist of sharing stories together, learning new facts about the books, and a project related to the story. This program should help young readers with comprehension, and reinforce the reading skills of older readers. Pre-registration is only required at the beginning to sign up your child for the year. Children may sign up at any time.


Middle Readers Club

This club is for readers in 3rd to 5th grade. This club will meet once a month on the 1st Tuesday of each month at 4:30 p.m. There will be required reading of a book, discussion and craft/science about the book will follow. At each meeting the next book will be announced and available to check out at the counter. This program should encourage children to read new books, comprehension, and social skills. Pre-registration is only required at the beginning to sign up your child for the year. Children are welcome to join the club at any time.


Seasoned Readers Club

This club is for readers in 6th – 8th grades. This group will meet once a month on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 4:30 p.m. There will be required reading each month for the young adults along with book discussion and science/craft each month. This would be a great chance for these youth to socialize, practice their reading skills and learn new craft/science techniques. Pre-registration is only required at the beginning to sign up your child for the year. Children are welcome to join the club at any time.


American Girl Club

The American Girl club meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 4:30 p.m. Each month a different American Girl is picked and will be the topic of discussion. An art or craft each month will be determined by the era of the chosen American Girl. Girls are always welcome to bring their dolls along, but girls do not have to own an American Girl to be a part of this club, anyone with a love of history is welcome. Pre-registration is only required at the beginning to sign up your child for the year. Children are welcome to join the club at any time.


Movie Book Club

Movie book club is for children 8—13 years old. The club will be assigned a book to read before the meeting, we will discuss the book and then watch the movie and compare. This class will last around 2 hours. Popcorn and water will be provided. The club will be the 4th Tuesday of the month at 4:30 p.m. Pre-registration is only required at the beginning to sign up your child for the year. Children are welcome to join the club at any time.


Chess and Checkers Club

Chess/ checkers club is open to anyone interested in playing or learning the game. We will meet the 2nd Friday of each month at 4:30 p.m. Chess and checker boards will be provided. Club will last around 1 hour.


Computer Clubs

Computer Club will meet on Thursdays at 4:30 p.m. The 1st and 3rd Thursdays will be for children 7-10 years old. The 2nd and 4th Thursdays will be for children 11-15 years old. The club will consist of learning computer techniques, learning new websites, and typing skills. Laptops will be provided. Class size is limited.


Game Night

On the 4th Friday of each month, we will host a game night, offering board games and/or card games. A great time to come and learn a new game. Game night will begin at 4:30 p.m.


Bingo for Books

Bingo will be on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month. Everyone is welcome. Bingo will start at 6:00 p.m.


Art Classes

Art classes meet the 1st and 3rd Fridays of each month at 4:30 p.m. This class is open to all school age children. The 1st Friday will be geared toward children ages 5—8. The 3rd Friday will be for children 9—13. The classes will talk about drawing techniques, shading, proportion, perspective, etc. Pre-registration is only required at the beginning to sign up your child for the year. Children are welcome to join the club at any time.


Beginning Art Class

Beginning art class is for anyone aged 14 and older, meeting on the 1st Monday of each month from 6:00 till 7:30 p.m. We will discuss the basics of art, values, blending, perspective, proportion, drawing skills, etc. Supply list available at front desk. Pre-registration is required.


Beginning Watercolor Class

Beginning watercolor class is for anyone aged 14 and older interested in learning about watercolor. Class will meet the 3rd Monday of each month from 6:00 till 7:30 p.m. We will discuss basic watercolor skills, color theory, and design. Supply list available at front desk. Pre-registration is required.
